About Weedon FC

Weedon FC remains the heart of the community providing the opportunity for children to be part of a team and enjoy the game. We are continuing to expand our junior teams, we currently have 11 teams and looking at starting an under 7’s team during the coming months, As well as our Vet’s team and next season having a 1st team up and running.

The club vision is to provide quality, safe opportunities for young people of all ages in our community and to provide a safe and positive alternative place to go other than playing on the streets. To help people realise their potential, develop personal skills and confidence and to introduce people to football regardless of age, ability, sex, religion and ethnic background. To improve the performance of players, coaches and volunteers within the club.

The club are proud of its achievements that has gained over the past 12 months,
May last year the club won Charter standard development club of the year 2017 in the NFA Awards.

We made the finals in October at the Daventry sport awards, in the categories coach, volunteer and club of the year. Our under 9’s yellow won at the weekend in the shield final and our under 10’s navy have made it through to the plate final at Sixfields stadium on 2nd June.

We currently run a junior mentor programme for 14-16 year old receive coaching and training to coach and attend a referee course, we have our second junior on programme at present, and also hope to enroll a few other next season.

Weedon FC is very much a family feeling club, I have heard parents of players from out of the village make comments such as

 “I feel like I live in Weedon since my son joined, and very much part of the community”

 “I could not imagine being part of any other club, I would rather travel, my son loves it”.

We have had a few of our juniors move on to academies, with huge talent and a few others who are on the radar of scouts, this is something the club is very proud of in the fact that we have been part of their journey.

Weedon FC want to continue aspiring young children to enjoy the game and achieve their future goals with the support of the club and community. We are currently in need of more facilities and pitches to enable the club to continue to thrive.

Weedon became FA affiliated in 1969, but had been playing friendly matches across Weedon for many years before then. Weedon first committee meeting was held in 1970 at the scout hut in Weedon and the first committee was Paddy Doyle – Chairman, Cyril Marriot – Treasurer, Duncan Smith – Manager & Secretary, Les Abbott – President, John Shortland – Committee Member.

Weedon played their first ever league game in 1972 in the Sunday League Alliance. Weedon played at the village hall playing field, where they used old goal posts that use to be used at the old polo field pitches and a wooden crossbar which was made and collected from Heyford on the morning of the first game which the players had to cycle over to collect, the pitch was marked out with saw dust from the Leatherland’s workshop.

Weedon won their first official match 4-1 with goals from Ogle 2, Leatherland & Engall. The half time tea was supplied by Peggy Osborn and after every game the goal post had to be taken down and store in a safe place along croft way in Weedon. Weedon FC first kit was Purple & Blue (West Ham). In Weedon first season they finished third in the league, in the late 70’s Weedon won the Ken Parker Cup Sundays (1977) and Sundays Division One Runners-up on several occasions, then wining the Presidents Cup & Premier Sunday League (1979).

Weedon carried on having success on Sundays throughout the 1980’s and in the mid-eighties Weedon FC moved to our current home the jubilee field. In 1992 Weedon FC joined the Saturday Northamptonshire Combination Football League, now the Northants Combination Football League. Historically the league consisted of mainly village teams in and around Northampton but now consisted of teams from all around Northamptonshire.

In the mid 1996 Weedon won the Northants Combination Division Two and were Area Cup runners-up. Recent successes have been the Northants Combination Reserve Division Two Runners Up 2010 & Reserves Division Two Cup Winners, Northants Combination Division Two Champions 2014 & Northants Combination Reserve Division Two Champions 2014 and Northants Combination Division Three Champions 2017.

In 2013 Weedon set up a Veteran’s team for the first time in their history and a season later in 2015 they won the Northamptonshire Sunday Combination Veterans Cup and the Veterans are still going strong today.

In 2017 Weedon FC were named Northamptonshire FA Charter Development Club of the Year.

In 2014 Weedon diversified its approach and set about establishing a grass roots youth academy for the local children to get involved in.

Although our continuing adult success has been the foundations of our club, a reinvigorated approach to football has seen the winds shift towards to a more community based club, focusing on the next generation of young footballers and therefor securing the long term future of our more senior teams. Weedon FC ran junior fun days, sourced suitable coaching staff and joined the Northampton District Youth Alliance League. We started our first season with 3 junior teams; under 7s, under 8s & under 11s. Our 1st year was a massive success with a huge amount of interest being shown from parents and players alike.

Year on year our junior teams have grown and grown, we now have 10 youth teams from ages under 6s to under 12s and now have many qualified level 1 & level 2 coaches as well as some of the latest training equipment and the committee will continue to invest into the club to ensure that our players continue to enjoy their football and the big hope is to have new changings very soon.
